The difference between Scholarly Journals VS. Popular Magazines.

Alternate names
Scholarly Journals: Also called Peer-reviewed Journals or Refereed Journals.
Popular Magazines: Also called Trade Journals

Appearance of journal
Scholarly Journals: Mainly text, plain paper, very little color, minimal advertising, may contain charts and illustrations.
Popular Magazines: Glossy paper, lots of color, photographs, lots of advertising.

Title of journal
Scholarly Journals: Frequently contains the word journal, bulletin, annals or review.
Popular Magazines: Catchy and easily recognised.

Article contents
Scholarly Journals: Introduction, methods, results, conclusion, bibliography, references, graphs, diagrams, author's credentials.
Popular Magazines: Opinions, general facts, entertaining articles.

Intended audience
Scholarly Journals: Subject experts and students.
Popular Magazines: General public.

Purpose of journal
Scholarly Journals: To spread research results to experts in the field, researchers and students.
Popular Magazines: To entertain, and to make money for the publishers.

Title of articles
Scholarly Journals: Long, descriptive, specific and formal.
Popular Magazines: Informal, short, catchy and often funny.  They may sound like a newspaper headline.

Article author's credentials
Scholarly Journals: Expert in the subject.  The author's credentials, such as university affiliation and degrees, are clearly stated.
Popular Magazines: Reporters and journalists, but may not be clear, and could be anyone.
